Punxsutawney, PA — From the Standard Speaker Tournament Most Valuable Player Sophia Shults scored a game-high 17 points and Olivia Williams added a career-high 15 to lead the Hazleton Area girls’ basketball team past host Punsutawney 75-52 in the title game of the Carl Truance Holiday Tournament, Friday evening, in Punsutawney. Williams drained two of her four 3-point baskets in the first quarter as the Lady Cougars (8-1) roared to a 27-12 advantage after one quarter. Bindas and Alexis Reimold both netted six points in the quarter. Williams found the range beyond the arc twice more in the second quarter as the Hazleton Area lead swelled to 44-25 by halftime, putting the Lady Cougars well on the way to their sixth straight victory. Freshman Sophia Benyo added 12 points and her classmate Bindas finished with 11 for the Lady Cougars. Kayla Lagowy chipped in eight. D. Griebel paced the Lady Chucks with 16 points, including four triples. A. Powell added 11. In addition to Shults being named MVP, Bindas was selected to the all-tournament team and Reimold received the Don Bishop Award for Extra Effort. Hazleton Area will open Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 play, Wednesday, at Berwick.
