Yuma, AZ — Cibola turned Friday's game with Westwood into a shootout in the second half, but the Raiders couldn't cash in on some chances in the closing minutes. The Raiders (2-2) fell 34-26 after driving the length of the field in the final minutes, only to turn the ball over inside the five yard line. Cibola's senior quarterback Ethan Arvizo went six-for-eight for 96 yards on the final drive, but an interception near the front corner of the endzone would drive a stake into the Raiders' hearts. "We’re just going to control what we can control going forward," Cibola coach Lucky Arvizo said. "Our kids played their hearts out tonight and left it on the field. That’s all that we can ask for. We just need to improve and work on the next game." The Raiders struggled with the Westwood (2-2) rushing attack from the onset. Warriors' running back Manny Collier carried his team with a ground-and-pound mindset with 20 carries for 168 yards in the first half. He finished with 39 carries for 385 yards and five touchdowns. Prior to Friday, he averaged eight carries per game. To open the game, Westwood went 67 yards on 11 plays for a short touchdown run for Collier. He broke loose on the next drive for 49 yards and a touchdown to put his team up 13-0 late in the first quarter. "He’s just a very fast individual," coach Arvizo said. "He has the sprinter’s speed and that’s difficult. He’s tough enough to run inside. They were able to run that trap play inside and he was able to break tackles. He’s a very good player." Cibola's receivers were able to give the Warriors' defensive backs some trouble, and late in the first Ethan Arvizo found senior Gabriel Ramirez on a 64-yard go-route to set the team up in the redzone. Arvizo was 19/34 for 392 yards and three touchdowns and interceptions alike through the air, while Ramirez had seven catches for 136 yards and a touchdown. A few plays later, junior Zeke Rios was able to sneak in on an 11-yard run to make the game 13-7 early in the second. Westwood (2-2) had seven-minute possession to close the first half where it largely rode Collier down the field. Two touchdowns were called back on holding calls and the Raiders forced a turnover on downs with 40 seconds left in the half in the redzone. The Warriors went into the half with a 13-7 lead. The break helped the Raiders kick into gear with the team finding a mismatch on the edges. On the first play from scrimmage of the third quarter, Ethan Arvizo hit Rios on a swing pass to the right on a formation with four receivers split in that direction. Rios zigged and zagged through defenders for a 65-yard touchdown reception to go ahead 14-13. A shootout broke out in the second half with the teams trading scores. There was only one punt in the game. Westwood took the lead back after a touchdown run by Collier to lead 19-14, but Cibola would only need three plays to take the lead back again after that. There were four lead changes in the third quarter. The Raiders' second touchdown of the third quarter came on a swing pass to Rios on the left side, this time for 70 yards to go back up at 20-19. Rios finished the game with nine carries for 34 yards and a touchdown on the ground, and eight receptions for 195 yards and two touchdowns as a receiver. "We always like to test the DBs and throw it deep," coach Arvizo said. "We tried to throw deep a couple of times, and they did a good job of staying back for a couple of interceptions. We decided to start throwing underneath a little bit. He (Rios) got some good blocks and he made some good cuts as well." The Warriors would bounce back on the other end with Collier again to take a 27-20 lead. Cibola scored its last touchdown of the game with 1:14 left in the third quarter when Arvizo found Ramirez on a flag right to the right side for 10 yards, but a missed conversations made the game 27-26. Westwood went back to the ground game in the fourth quarter and after yet another touchdown from Collier, led 34-26. The Warriors were on the verge of putting the game away, but a goal-line stand by the Raiders with 4:41 left in the game flipped the field. That was Cibola's second stand within the 10-yard line. Arvizo completed a couple of his best passes of the night on the next drive, starting with a 20-yard strike to junior Cristian Bonilla. Arvizo found Bonilla twice, Rios, Ramirez twice and Elijah Contreras on the drive. On first-and-goal he rolled right to the short side when a Westwood defensive back jumped the route for an interception. That ended any chance of the comeback. Cibola will be back at Brawley (CA) next Friday.
