San Dimas, CA — SAN DIMAS – Bonita High School’s football team may have entered Friday’s Palomares League opener against Colony ranked No. 2 in Division 10, but that didn’t mean much with several of the league contenders in tougher divisions, including the Titans, ranked No. 9 in Division 5. Colony, who joins the Palomares this season and is chasing its fifth league title since 2013 after moving over from the Mt. Baldy League, had only lost to tough La Serna and Redlands East Valley. That’s why Bonita’s 28-21 victory over Colony at San Dimas High was so impressive, and it came behind another stellar effort from senior quarterback J.P. Andrade, who threw for 266 yards and four touchdowns as the Bearcats improved to 5-1 and 1-0. On the field, Bonita is undefeated after having forfeited a win to Riverside Poly a few weeks ago because of an ineligible player. “It’s kind of cool,” Bonita coach Steve Bogan said. “There’s a part of you that says the only way you can find out how good you can be is to play the best opponents. To be in a league like this allows our guys to push themselves inside and out.” Bonita did catch a break, however, because Colony’s (3-3, 0-1) starting quarterback Joseph Tesimale was not available while under concussion protocol. Tesimale is a big loss as a dual threat having thrown for 500 yards and four TDs while also rushing for 398 yards and four scores. But Titans back-up Marco Gonzalez was fine in his absence, throwing for 268 yards and three touchdown passes, all of which went to Anthony Junius. And Gonzales nearly brought the Titans all the way back, throwing a nine-yard TD pass to Junius with 1:09 left to bring the Titans with seven, but the Bearcats recovered the onside kick and held on for the win. Colony running back Elijah Monroe was able to finish with 113 yards. “We’re a spread option team and with our number one quarterback he runs a lot more,” Colony coach Steve Randall said. “But our kid (Gonzalez) played hard and he had a lot of heart and we fell short today. With this league you want to give yourself a chance to have the ball at the end, but we came up a little short, that’s all.” Colony led early after Gonzalez delivered a 28-yard strike to Junius, who made an even better catch extending himself in the endzone for a 7-0 lead with 2:18 to go in the first quarter. After an ugly opening series, Andrade answered the Titans’ score by throwing a screen to Cade Cadam who turned it into a 74-yard touchdown to tie the score, 7-7. Andrade, looking for a first down on fourth and 10, got more than he bargained for throwing a pass over the middle for Aalias Williams, who went all the way for a 29-yard score and a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. On another big third down, Andrade and Cadam make it look too easy, hooking up for a 45-yard score and a 21-7 lead and it stayed that way until half. Andrade put the game away to extend the Bearcats’ lead to 21 points. He followed a 56-yard pass to Cadam with an eight-yard TD pass to Jarratt DanceKelly for a 28-7 lead with 3:40 left in the third. After Bonita’s 28 unanswered points, Colony finally answered back when Gonzalez hooked up with Junius over the middle for a 28-yard connection to cut the Bearcats’ lead to 28-14 with 1:24 left in the third.
