Fairfield, CA — On Tuesday, 4/2 the Vanden JV Vikings were defeated in the rubber match of their MEL play series versus Will C. Wood High School. The final score was 2-1 in a game shortened to 6 innings by the CIF JV Baseball Time Limit Rule. The loss drops the Vikings record to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in MEL play. The Vikings once again had the “left on base” bug as the opportunities for the to score in this game were abundant. Unfortunately, the clutch hits were a nonentity. The visitors had bases loaded with 0 outs in the 1st and 6th innings and were only able to score 1 run on a sacrifice fly. They also had a runner on 3rd base with 0 outs in the 4th inning, and runner on 2nd with 1 out in the 4th inning. The Vikings were just not able to get the big hits they needed that could have changed the outcome. The Viking pitchers were once again up to the task, giving their team a chance to win the game. Max Stephenson started for Vanden, going 2 innings and allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 2. He was relieved by sophomore right-hander, Brian Lanigan. He worked 2 1/3 innings, allowed 1 earned run, on 0 hits but issued 3 walks and hit 2 batters. He struck out 2 Wildcats, but ultimately he was credited with the loss. The Vikings return to action on Wednesday, 4/3 when they faceoff with Leroy Greene Academy in a non-league game played at Sutter Health Park.
