Huntington Beach, CA — JSerra traveled with 1 varsity and 8 JV athletes to Huntington Beach to compete in the annual Pete Brown First Serve event. KOach Kirk has entered this tourney 17 years! It is called First Serve as it is intended for players who have not competed in many USTA events. We will learn a little later, that, this isn't always the case. Upper end players with high rankings are restricted however. The Lions opened up with the Segerstrom Jaguars, who we were fortunate enough to move, serve and think faster than they; posting a 5-1 victory. 3 doubles and 3 singles sets are played vs each school like our dual matches at home, except, no rotations, 1 round only, consisting of 8 game pro-sets [first to 8 games]. Doubles teams of Hudson/Lucas, Kayden/Johnny. Mike/Alex were victorious, 8-6, 8-4 and 8-1 respectively at lines 1, 2, and 3. Kayden and Johnny were down 0-3 before reeling off 7 straight and finally closing. In singles Logan served up a bagel at line 3, 8-0 while Enzo grinded for an hard-fought 8-6 victory. Segerstrom's strength, unfortunately, was at line 1 singles where HB competed very well in a 4-8 loss. I will place 7 MVP's here because it only takes 7 and since Hudson is on varsity, his picture/name isnt in the drop down list for JV MVP's, but he definitely is one! BTW, forewarning there wont be MVP list for the next 2 matches, for 2 different reasons! GO LIONS!
