In a thrilling game that came down to the final seconds, Pine Bush varsity football suffered a tough 27-26 loss to Newburgh Free Academy on Friday night. The Bushmen put up a valiant effort, with explosive plays on all sides of the ball including offense, defense, and special teams, but ultimately came up just short as Newburgh kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired to win the game.
Pine Bush’s rushing attack was electric, totaling 229 yards on just 23 carries, with touchdown runs of 60, 72, and 4 yards. Defensively, Pine Bush forced a big turnover late in the contest, intercepting the ball near the endzone to halt a long drive by the Goldbacks. The Bushmen then took the lead with 4 minutes left to play after a determined drive. However, after Newburgh answered with a scoring drive of their own, Pine Bush responded with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with just 1:20 left on the clock. Unfortunately, the extra point was blocked, holding Pine Bush's lead to 2 points.
Newburgh then moved down the field and kicked the game-winning field goal in the final seconds, leaving Pine Bush with a heartbreaking 1-point loss.
Pine Bush, now 2-4, will look to rebound as they host Middletown on Saturday at 3 p.m. for their Homecoming game. With the home crowd behind them, the Bushmen will aim to turn things around and get back in the win column.
