Chula Vista, CA — Those that made their way to Devore Stadium on Saturday were treated to an Instant classic between the Aggies and Hornets, as the Hornets outscored the Aggies 30-7 in the 2nd half. The first quarter saw each team put quick ones on the board, with Moore punching it in from the 3, then Akili to Olsen to draw a 7-7 tie mid way in 1st quarter… the Aggies would then score on 2 more possessions in the 1st Quarter to close it 21-7. The Aggies Blocked a 2nd quarter punt, which resulted in a screen to Vanilla going to the house and a 28-7 lead for the visiting Aggies. A 16yd FG would be added by Longmire and that would put the Aggies up 31-7. The Hornets didn’t back down though and Akili found the end zone on a 1yd QB run to make it 31-14. Thatch found Fares in the end zone again and the teams went to intermission 38-14, Aggies. While the lead was strong going into the half, the coaches reminded the players- this isn’t over. Still a lot of football left…like they knew what was coming… The Hornets opened the 3rd focused and Akili hit Olsen for his 2nd TD of the day… after a missed 2pt play, Aggies possession resulted in a punt and the game was 38-30 in a blink as the Hornet offense turned an interception into a 3 yd Jackson TD run. Akili would find Olsen yet again for his 3rd score of the game and the Hornets were within 2, 38-36. The 3rd would end, 38-36. By the 4th, old Mo had swung in the favor of the Hornets as Akili hit Olsen yet again for his 4th TD of the game, to make it 42-38. Then a scrambling Akili found his WR in the end zone for the 2 pt try. 44-38. The teams went back and forth with field position the rest of the 4th. An Aggies decision to not take a FG resulted in better field position after they were able to contain the elusive Akili on 4th down giving them better field position than had they kicked the FG. That’s all the Aggies needed as the clock was just around 4 minutes. All game long Thatch had eluded defenders, keeping his eyes down field and making plays. When it mattered most, he was unwavering and showed why he’s QB1. With under a minute, Thatch came up under center with less than a yard between him and end zone and punched it in to tie it up. Longmire came in and delivered the go ahead PAT and it was 45-44. The Hornets got the ball w 47 seconds left and moved down the field w ease…a quick completion and time out left the Hornets w 1 second and 37 yds to the end zone. Would it happen again? On the final play, the Aggies rushed 3, dropped 8… Akili let it fly and it sailed out the back of the end zone… With the win, the Aggies move to 1-0 and host Legacy(1-1) at home next Friday in the Battle of the Bulls Rivalry Game, while Lincoln travels to Long Beach Poly (0-1).
