Gang Tackle by the Longhorns
Lakeside, CA — The Longhorns' winning streak came to an end for the second year in a row at the hands of the Lakeside Vaqueros.
The Horns faced a 38-9 defeat against Lakeside on a warm Saturday afternoon.
The home team took the lead following a three-and-out by Vista.
During the Vaqueros' second possession, Vista intercepted the ball and returned it to the Lakeside 15-yard line. However, the drive stalled, and the Longhorns had to settle for a 36-yard field goal at the start of the second quarter.
Vista narrowed Lakeside's lead to 14-9 after scoring again, following a turnover on downs by the home team. The drive spanned 57 yards over seven plays.
Several questionable calls were made during the game, but one of the most unusual occurred while the game was paused. After a seemingly friendly conversation between the officiating crew and the Vista head coach during halftime, Vista was penalized with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
The penalty was odd since officials usually prefer to converse with coaches during halftime. As the discussion happened at midfield, only the coach and the calling official know the content of the exchange. However, the official's reaction suggests it was quite significant.
Lakeside extended their lead to 22-9 with another touchdown in the third quarter.
Vista stayed in the game, but a disastrous sequence of events quashed any comeback hopes. The Longhorns' last four possessions, marred by a fumble and three interceptions, crushed their playoff dreams, allowing Lakeside to secure their advancement.
Vista's season will proceed next Saturday in Temecula against the Temecula Golden Bears. Despite the playoffs being over, Vista's season marches on.
Until next week,
