Huntington Beach, CA — The Foothill Knights met the La Serna Lancers at the Huntington Beach All Turf Tournament on a hazy, chilly afternoon.
The Knights opened the scoring in the 9th minute on a finish from Matthew Mendoza on an assist from Garrett Zehner. The Knights were in control and the Lancers struggled to reach their attacking half. Jacob Garcia secured a penalty when he was taken down inside the box. However, the La Serna keeper saved the attempt from the mark by Garcia.
Foothill was back to what now appears to a growing habit of coming off the bench slow and sluggish. The Knights eventually woke back up but missed multiple good chances and a couple of sitters in front of the net. Shots hit the post and crossbar, players missed gimmes inside the 6 yard box, and many other chances were missed. The score could legitimately have been 7-0 in favor of Foothill before the defensive breakdown that led to the goal by La Serna.
The game was unnecessarily tense and close through the last 15 minutes. The Knights were 1 mistake away from losing the result. Potential is a dangerous thing...unfortunately when too many opportunities are uncapitalized, it can tear a team apart. Luckily, the Knights were resilient enough to withstand the pressure and come out ahead.
Tomorrow, Foothill faces off against Valencia in the same Huntington Beach tournament. Many seniors are on a Munch Day tomorrow so bench/backup players as well as a few JV players will be expected to band together and secure a result so we can progress in the tournament.
