Foothill Knights Rally to Victory Over Fullerton Indians in Thrilling Home Match
Fullerton 2, Foothill 4
Celebration!
Santa Ana, CA — On a chilly evening at Foothill High School’s home field, the Knights secured a hard-fought 4-2 win over the Fullerton Indians in a Boys' Varsity soccer match that featured impressive displays of determination, teamwork, and grit. The game was a thrilling encounter that saw the Knights come from behind after an early mistake to ultimately secure all three points in front of the home crowd.
The match had an intense start, as Foothill appeared in control early on. However, in the 7th minute, a defensive error by senior Miles Teranishi led to a quick counterattack by Fullerton, and the Indians capitalized on the opportunity to take a 1-0 lead. The early setback didn't deter Foothill, who continued to press forward.
Foothill equalized in the 27th minute when sophomore Alex Monge, who had an outstanding performance throughout the night, scored off a well-placed assist from senior captain Jacob Garcia. Garcia’s vision and leadership were on full display as he set up the play to bring the game level at 1-1.
As the first half was winding down, disaster struck for the Knights. In the 39th minute, Fullerton sent in an in-swinging ball on a corner kick and Foothill’s netminder Josh Picker misjudged the ball, allowing the ball to cross over the line in his possession. Fullerton retook the lead with just seconds to play in the half. With the score at 2-1 going into the halftime break, Foothill faced a tough challenge, needing a strong second half to turn things around.
The second half began with Foothill pressing relentlessly, looking for an equalizer. Their efforts were rewarded just 4 minutes in when Jacob Garcia was fouled in the box, earning a penalty kick. Senior captain Quinn Frye stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted the ball home to make it 2-2, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
With the score tied, both teams continued to trade attacking chances, but it was the Knights who broke the deadlock in the 70th minute. A long cross from sophomore Caden Granger found the head of Alex Monge on the back post, who expertly directed the ball past Fullerton’s goalkeeper for his second goal of the night, putting Foothill ahead 3-2.
The Knights sealed the victory in the 77th minute when Quinn Frye scored his second goal of the game. After a blocked shot from Matthew Mendoza, the rebound fell to Frye, who buried it into the back of the net to put Foothill up 4-2. Despite Fullerton’s attempts to respond, the Knights held firm and saw out the game to claim the win.
Unfortunately, the match ended on a sour note for Foothill, as standout sophomore Saul Fiallos, who had been a constant force on both sides of the ball, was shown a straight red card in the final minute of the game for a foul. The decision seemed harsh, as it wasn’t a red-card-worthy tackle, and it was a disappointing end to what had been an exceptional performance by Fiallos. His efforts had been crucial in pressing Fullerton’s back line, forcing turnovers, and creating chances throughout the match.
In addition to Monge and Frye’s standout performances, Aidan Robinette, Karlo Martinez, Jacob Garcia, and Alex Rios also played key roles in the win. Garcia’s leadership and vision, in particular, were instrumental in Foothill’s comeback, and the team played with a level of unity and cohesion that had not been seen before this season. They looked dangerous at every turn, and the performance was a joy to watch.
The victory was a clear sign of progress for the Knights, who will look to carry this momentum into their next match. Senior night is Thursday, where Foothill will face crosstown rival Beckman at home. They’ll follow that up with a tough away match against Mater Dei on Saturday.
For Foothill, this was the first game of the season where they truly played like a team, and with this kind of performance, the Knights have shown they are a force to be reckoned with as the season continues.
