Santa Ana, CA — The Foothill Knights' hopes of redemption after a disappointing loss to Beckman took another hit on a beautiful Saturday evening in December, as they were defeated 2-1 by the Mater Dei Monarchs in a hard-fought soccer match at Mater Dei High School. The game, that started at sunset and finished under the lights, was a tense battle from start to finish, with the Knights’ defensive mistakes and a red card proving costly in the end.
Coming off a 2-3 loss to Beckman on Thursday, the Knights were eager to make up for their mistakes, but the game began on a frustrating note. Just three minutes into the match, a Mater Dei player found his teammate unmarked on the weak side of the field, just inside the box and sent a shot toward goal. Foothill senior goalkeeper Josh Picker managed to get a hand to the ball but it wasn’t enough to keep it out of the net. The Monarchs led 1-0 early and the Knights were left scrambling to get back into the game.
The early goal set the tone for what would become a chaotic first 25 minutes for the Knights, who struggled to adjust to the pace of the Monarchs’ attacking play. Senior centerback Miles Teranishi was booked with a yellow card in the 11th minute after a late challenge, further putting the Knights on edge. Things worsened in the 23rd minute when senior Nathan Torres, who had come in to replace the injured Nihar Sinha, was called for a penalty inside the box following a rash tackle. The Monarchs had a chance to double their lead from the penalty spot, but fortune smiled on Foothill as the attempt went wide, keeping the deficit at just one goal.
Despite the early defensive mistakes, Foothill began to settle into the game after some tactical adjustments to the personnel and defensive assignments. The Knights’ resilience paid off in the 33rd minute, when senior captain Jacob Garcia produced a brilliant individual effort, dribbling past two defenders and beating the goalkeeper to level the score at 1-1. The equalizer breathed new life into the Knights. The Monarchs did not relent and both teams exchanged attacking blows as the game moved toward the second half.
Foothill came out with more aggression in the second half, pressing high and looking for a breakthrough, but Mater Dei’s defense held firm. The match seemed destined to end in a hard-fought draw, but a costly mistake in the 83rd minute sealed the Knights' fate. Teranishi mishandled a Mater Dei clearance just inside the center circle, gifting the ball to a quick Monarch attacker. As the player charged toward goal, Teranishi slid in from behind and committed a foul inside the box, earning a red card (yellow card foul but his second yellow card of the game) and the Knights were reduced to 10 men.
From the resulting penalty kick, Mater Dei’s attacker made no mistake, beating Picker, who guessed correctly but was unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line. With just seven minutes left, the Knights were down a man and fighting to get a result. Despite their best efforts, including a few late pushes forward, Foothill was unable to recover, and the match ended in a 2-1 loss.
As for Mater Dei, the win was a strong follow-up to their impressive 4-0 victory over Tesoro, and they will take plenty of confidence from the hard-fought victory. The Monarchs played a disciplined game, capitalizing on Foothill’s mistakes when it mattered most.
For Foothill, this one stings. They were right in the match and appeared poised for a draw, but their defensive lapses and indiscipline ultimately cost them. The red card and penalty conceded highlighted an ongoing issue for Foothill—defensive discipline. In their past two matches, the Knights have conceded four penalty kicks, a statistic that cannot be ignored. It’s clear that the lack of self control in the defensive third is becoming a pattern, and the coaching staff will need to address these issues moving forward.
This defeat was particularly bitter for the Knights, who were very much in the game until the final moments. As the season progresses, the Knights will need to clean up their defensive errors if they are to have success in the tough matches ahead.
