Pacifica, CA — In a battle of potential league champions San Mateo took Round 1 with a hard fought 41-36 victory over Terra Nova. The Tigers came out hot taking a quick 8-2 lead, but the Bearcats settled down and the game was tied 8-8 after a quarter. It was a back and forth game the rest of the way until Yanira Nunez hit back to back baskets to put San Mateo up for good at 34-30. Violet MacAvoys basket off Bella Fong’s assist with two minutes left proved to be the game winner at 38-32 and Kaitlyn Schuh’s three free throw iced the game. The Bearcats had great games from Schuh with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks, Jeressa Cadiz ran the point and had a huge lefty layup in the 4th, MacAvoy controlled the paint with 7 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks, Fong added 6 points and 4 assists, but the star of the game was Yanira. Nunez with 9 points, 6 steals and 6 deflections and who was tasked with defending the other teams best player while playing all 32 minutes
