Mountaineers Visit Sin Bin Often, But Come Out With 4-2 Win over the Wolves
Nashoba Regional 2, Wachusett Regional 4
Westborough, MA — Six minor penalties and one major penalty left Wachusett shorthanded for about 1/3 of the contest on Saturday, but the team managed to hold on and defeat Nashoba 4-2.
At 5:41 of the first period, off a neutral zone faceoff, Cody Penniman sent the puck to Ryan Flaherty who raced around a defender and beat the goalie to put Wachusett up 1-0.
At 11:32 as Wachusett was killing its second penalty of the night, Ethan Bennett managed to bounce puck off the glass and get it bouncing in the neutral zone where Travis Laidlaw picked it up, went in on the breakaway and snapped a wrist shot to the far side, taking Wachusett into the first intermission up 2-0.
Wachusett killed off a 4th penalty in the 2nd period and neither team was able to score sending the game to the 3rd period still with Wachusett leading 2-0.
Just 19 seconds into the period Wachusett was called for a major penalty for head contact and a 2nd penalty just 1 minute later would put Nashoba on a 5 on 3 advantage. The Wolves would capitalize after about 40 seconds making the score 2-1.
Nashoba would tie the score at 2 at the 5:47 mark of the 3rd period and Wachusett would kill off one more penalty before Ryan Flaherty gave Travis Laidlaw a great breakout pass into the neutral zone. After a shifty move on a D, Travis would bury the game winner at 10:50 of the 3rd. Cody Penniman would add an empty net goal with 2 seconds to play for a final score of 4-2.
Junior Goalie Trevor Staiti was awarded the hard hat award by his teammates for stopping 26 of the 28 shots he faced in net.
The team is now 8 and 1 on the season and will battle Algonquin next on Wednesday night at 6:15 pm at the NorthStar Ice Sports in Westboro.
