Westborough, MA — On Saturday night Wachusett faced off against arch rival Shrewsbury. Despite a strong start and an early lead, the battle-tested Colonials skated away with a 6-1 win. Braden Allaire scored just 1:42 into the game off a faceoff draw by Matt Brousseau. Allaire snapped a shot over the goalie's glove to put Wachusett up 1-0. Wachusett had a couple more point blank opportunities in the first, but credit the Shrewsbury goalie (and the crossbar) for making some big saves. Goalie Kevin Shaw had mad a couple outstanding saves in the first period, but took a puck off his knee and had to be removed from the game. Trevor Staiti came in and stopped a flurry of shots to keep the score 1-0 into the first intermission. Shrewsbury would score just 16 seconds into the 2nd period on a nice tip off a shot from the point. Six minutes later they would take the lead for good on a power play goal. Trailing 2-1 entering the 3rd Wachusett was in this contest, but Shrewsbury scored goals at 1:15, 1:25, 7:03 and 10:48 of the final frame to earn a 6 to 1 win. Wachusett's next game is Wednesday when they host Hopedale. This will be the annual Senior Night Game where seniors Matt Bjorkman, Tanner Watkins and Shea Whalen will be honored.
