Wachusett Clinches Playoff Berth With 5-4 OT Win Over Hopedale on Senior Night
Hopedale 4, Wachusett Regional 5
Westborough, MA — Tonight, Wachusett Hockey hosted its annual Senior Night presentation honoring its 3 senior players, Matt Bjorkman, Tanner Watkins and Shea Whalen and our senior manager Anabelle Joslyn.
When the ceremony was over and the puck was dropped Wachusett raced out to a quick 1-0 lead when junior captain Cody Penniman scored at the 1:55 mark of the first period with assists going to Matt Bjorkman and Tanner Watkins.
After Hopedale tied the score at 1, junior Aiden Boyce scored at the 6:12 mark of the first with a sharp wrist shot in the upper left corner. Bjorkman and Penniman were credited with the assists.
Wachusett would not score again until late in the 3rd period, trailing 3-2, when Penniman again found the back of the net, scoring on a breakaway off a great breakout pass from Travis Laidlaw.
The lead did not last long as Hopedale took a 4-3 lead with just 2:01 left to play. After a timeout and the goalie pulled, Wachusett would control the puck off an offensive zone faceoff and Laidlaw wristed a water bottle shot into the upper left corner tying the game at 4. Bjorkman and Penniman again earned assists, but Matt Brousseau set a great screen in front of the goalie.
Regulation would end with the score tied 4-4 and the teams would skate into overtime. At the 3:19 mark, Brayden Allaire won a faceoff back to Tanner Watkins who slid the puck across the blue line to Colin Carlson. Carlson put a shot on net and Caden Lane tipped it in through the 5-hole to complete the comeback victory for Wachusett.
Reed LaBaire made some key saves down the stretch for Wachusett. The win gave Wachusett a berth into the postseason for the 2nd straight year.
The team travels to Waltham on Saturday night for a Division 1 matchup.
