Waltham, MA — Freshman goaltender Reed LaBaire stopped all 26 shots he faced in leading Wachusett to its first shutout of the season last night over Waltham. Wachusett (now 11-2-1) came into last night's game ranked 29th of all Division I teams and Waltham was ranked 16th with a 12-2-0 record (now 12-3-0). The team played a solid 45 minutes earning a much-needed win over a quality opponent. The Mountaineers came out flying in the first outshooting Waltham 10 to 4. At 8:47 of the first period, 11 seconds after a power play had expired, junior Matt Brousseau banged home a centering pass from behind the net from Cody Penniman. Travis Laidlaw also assisted on the goal to put Wachusett up 1-0. Wachusett was on the power play again for the last 1:30 of the 1st period. With the clock running out, Laidlaw wristed a shot that found the back of the net with 1.1 seconds remaining, but after the officials discussed the play, the goal was disallowed for goalie interference. Waltham found a spark in the second period and turned up the heat on Wachusett, winning the shots battle 11 to 3. Reed LaBaire made his biggest save of the night about halfway through the frame when a turnover led to a Waltham breakaway. LaBaire made a sprawling save to keep the score 1-0 heading into the third. At the 5:12 mark of the third period, Wachusett finished off one of the prettiest plays of the night. On a reverse breakout, left wing Shea Whalen gave a centering pass to Matt Bjorkman creating a 2 on 1 break. Bjorkman drew the defenseman toward him and passed over to Aiden Boyce who one-timed the puck to the back of the net putting Wachusett up 2-0 with under 10 to play. Waltham would not go away quietly, outshooting Wachusett 11-3 in the third and 26 to 16 for the game, but LaBaire continued his solid play in earning his first career shutout and the first shutout for the team this season. Waltham would go on the power play with about 3 minutes left and pull the goalie for a 6 on 4 advantage. Tanner Watkins, Jake Penniman, Colin Carlson, Owen Ambach, Patrick Vallee, Ryan Flaherty, Cody Penniman, Travis Laidlaw, Matt Bjorkman, Aiden Boyce, Caden Lane, Matt Brousseau and Brayden Allaire all combined in the Penalty Kill effort to secure the shutout.
