Westborough, MA — Junior Goalie Trevor Staiti saved all 8 shots he faced en route to his first shutout victory of the season last night against Grafton by a score of 7 - 0. Staiti was awarded the Hard Hat Award for his efforts.
After beating Grafton 11-1 in their first matchup 4 weeks ago, Wachusett came out a little flat in the first period. The Mountaineers did outshoot Grafton 8 to 3 for the frame, but only came out with a 1-0 lead after Cody Penniman scored a shorthanded goal at 12:28 on an assist by Travis Laidlaw.
The Mountaineers woke up in the 2nd, scoring 5 goals:
1. Just six seconds into the period, Ryan Flaherty scored with assists going to Penniman and Laidlaw.
2. At 5:56, Senior Captain Matt Bjorkman scored a breakaway goal on a great feed by Tanner Watkins. Shea Whalen also picked up an assist.
3. Travis Laidlaw would score the second shorthanded goal of the game on a feed from Watkins at the 8 minute mark.
4. At 11:40, Caden Lane was in the right place at the right time banging home a beautiful pass by Flaherty.
5. And the last goal of the period came from Travis Laidlaw on the pwer play at 12:49. That goal was unassisted.
With a 6-0 lead entering the 3rd, the clock would be running for the final frame. Junior Aiden Boyce scored the only goal of the period on a centering feed from Matt Bjorkman.
Wachusett was able to dress 5 JV players and have them see quality playing time.
With the win, Wachusett looks ahead to the final 2 weeks of the regular season where it will play 5 games in 12 days. The team will enter this final leg on a 2 game shutout streak.
