Wachusett Finishes 8 and 0 in Roy Conference With 4-2 Win Over Nashoba
Wachusett Regional 4, Nashoba Regional 2
Marlborough, MA — On Monday afternoon, Wachusett downed Roy-Conference rival Nashoba by a score of 4-2 and capped off an undefeated season in conference play (8 and 0).
After a scoreless first period with both teams a little flat, Wachusett came out flying in the second and scored just 16 seconds in. Junior Captain Cody Penniman took a pass from his brother Jake and flew down the left side. After stopping on the half wall, he slid a pass across the front of the net to linemate Ryan Flaherty who buried it for the 1-0 lead.
Nashoba tied the game at 1 just 4 minutes later, but at 11:36, Senior Captain Matt Bjorkman scored on a centering pass from Aiden Boyce from behind the net. Shea Whalen also earned an assist as a strong forecheck by Whalen and Boyce created the turnover.
Nashoba would score first in the third period to tie the score at 2, but Wachusett took over from there.
Just 1 minute and 26 seconds after Nashoba tied the score, junior Matt Brousseau scored the eventual game winner on a power play goal. Assists went to Cody Penniman and Matt Bjorkman.
With just under 2 minutes to play and the score 3 - 2, Nashoba called a timeout. But off the faceoff, Brousseau won the draw clean back to linemate Caden Lane who snapped a wrister into the top corner of the net for a 4-2 victory.
Freshman Reed LaBaire continued his solid goaltending play stopping 20 of the 22 shots he faced.
The team is now 14-2-1 on the season and looking forward to a big Division I matchup against Natick on Saturday.
