Westborough, MA — The Mountaineers achieved the 3-peat as they beat Westboro 7-3 in the Finals of the Boro's Cup Tournament. Wachusett came out flying in this one outshooting the Rangers 20 to 3 in the first period, but only had a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Ryan Flaherty scored a shorthanded goal at 10:02 on a great pass from Travis Laidlaw to put the Mountaineers on the board. Just 23 seconds into the second period, Ethan Bennett put Wachusett up 2-0 scoring on another assist by Laidlaw. Just 3 and a half minutes later Laidlaw would get his 3rd assist as Cody Penniman extended the lead to 3-0. A bad altercation halfway through the second period would put Wachusett shorthanded for 7 minutes, opening the door for Westboro to get back in the game. And that's exactly what they did - scoring three times on the major penalty. The score was tied 3-3 at the second intermission. When Wachusett returned to even strength, the flood gates opened as they scored 4 straight goals in a span of just over 6 minutes in the third period. Flaherty would score his 2nd of the night on another feed from Laidlaw (Travis had 4 assists in total) to put Wachusett up for good. 32 seconds later, Brayden Allaire scored with assists going to his linemates, Matt Brousseau and Caden Lane. Junior Aiden Boyce netted his first goal as a Mountaineer on a feed from Lane. Finally, Freshman Owen Ambach scored his first career goal, unassisted, to round out the scoring 7 - 3 and complete the 3-peat for Wachusett. Kevin Shaw improved to 3 and 0 on the season in net stopping 18 of 21 shots. Shaw and Matt Brousseau were named to the "All-Tournament Team" and Travis Laidlaw was named "Tournament MVP".
