Detroit, MI — PONTIAC, Mich. (2/7/2025) -- Senior Meredith Leavell made a career-high 22 saves and freshman Tunie Mullen scored her first two collegiate goals as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team opened the season with a 17-5 setback to San Diego State. The game was played indoors at UWM Sports Complex in Pontiac, Michigan. The 22 saves are the second most in school history, behind only the 25 Brett Yenger had at Longwood in 2009, while the two goals by Mullen marked the first Titan freshman to have multiple strikes in her debut since 2016. Senior Maddy Camm had two goals, an assist and a team-high four draw controls. Senior Leah Bodnar registered three assists and two draw controls and senior Katie Bilello and junior Angelina Hook each had two caused turnovers and two ground balls. San Diego State started the game with five straight goals, despite six saves and a caused turnover by Leavell in the first 17 minutes of action. A draw control win by Camm turned into the first score of the year as Bodnar found her for a goal at the 12:28 mark in the second. A few minutes later, junior Alyssa Jarvis was able to beat the keeper and it was 5-2, but SDSU took an 8-2 advantage into the break. In the third, Camm fed Mullen for her first collegiate goal with 3:23 left in the third to make it 10-3 and early in the fourth, Bodnar found Camm in front of the net and it was 11-4 with 14:10 remaining. The Titans then took advantage of an Aztecs' card and Bodnar set up Mullen, who fired one past the keeper and it was 11-5 with 9:34 to go, but SDSU ended the game on an offensive spurt. Leavell ended with that take away and three GB's. Jarvis added two draws and freshman Jaeda Jensen had two ground balls.
