Verdugo Hills Varsity Dons stayed in it until the end, but Garfield pulled away late in a 2-1 victory on Monday. The game was tied at one in the bottom of the fifth when an error scored one run.
Both teams were strong on the bump. Garfield pitchers struck out 12, while Verdugo Hills Varsity Dons sat down nine.
Garfield opened the scoring in the first after #12 hit a solo inside the park home run.
Anthony Velasquez hit a sacrifice fly, which helped Verdugo Hills Varsity Dons tie the game at one in the top of the third.
Milo Medeiros took the loss for Verdugo Hills Varsity Dons. The reliever went one inning, allowing one run (zero earned) on one hit, striking out one and walking none. D'Angelo Duran stepped on the mound first for Verdugo Hills Varsity Dons. The starting pitcher allowed two hits and one run over four innings, striking out seven and walking four. #24 started on the bump for Garfield. The pitcher surrendered one hit and one run over four and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking five.
Isaiah Guevara set the tone at the top of the lineup, leading Verdugo Hills Varsity Dons with two hits in four at bats. Velasquez led Verdugo Hills Varsity Dons with one run batted in. Cutlor Gouger-Fannon stole two bases.
#2, #21, #12, and #11 each collected one hit for Garfield. #12 went 1-for-1 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in.
Verdugo Hills Varsity Dons will travel to South Gate for their next game on Wednesday.
