Baldwin City, KS — Baldwin City– The Tonganoxie Chieftains showed resilience and determination Thursday night, battling back from a two-goal deficit to secure a 2-2 draw against the Baldwin Bulldogs in an intense matchup that extended into two overtime periods.
From the opening whistle, the Chieftains pressed forward, creating multiple scoring opportunities in the first half but struggling to find the back of the net. Baldwin capitalized on a defensive lapse to take a 1-0 lead before halftime, putting Tonganoxie in an early hole.
Early the second half, Baldwin struck again, extending their advantage to 2-0. However, the Chieftains refused to back down. Midway through the half, Natalie Loving provided the spark Tonganoxie needed, slotting home a crucial goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.
With time winding down, the Chieftains continued to apply pressure, and their persistence paid off. Grace Weatherford delivered the equalizer, her first of her career, finishing a well-placed assist from Miley Maxwell to bring the score to 2-2.
The game continued into two overtime periods, with both teams generating chances but neither able to break the deadlock. Despite coming close on multiple occasions, the Chieftains couldn’t find the winning goal, and the match ended in a hard-fought draw.
The coaching staff are pleased with the team’s fight but know there’s still work to be done. The team will hold practice on Friday before enjoying a well-earned weekend off. They will return to the field Monday to begin preparations for their upcoming home matchup against the Leavenworth Pioneers.
Tonganoxie will look to build on this performance and turn their scoring opportunities into a victory when they take the field next week.
