South Pasadena Varsity Tigers at Angel Stadium
Anaheim, CA — The South Pasadena Varsity Tigers had an exciting Saturday in Anaheim, playing in their first Halo Classic. From the Philly cheesesteaks at the tailgate before the game to the player introductions announced over the PA system, the game had the feel of a major league event.
Coach Jaime Garcia decided to get all the senior pitchers in the game, and they all performed well. Benjamin Regan started on the mound, with Beck Brenek, Evan Barreau, Brandon Woo, Gabe Vogel, Charlie Vogel, Leo Castillo, and Jon Bracamonte finishing out the game. They collectively struck out seven and gave up only two earned runs.
As for offense, the Tigers gave the South Pasadena faithful a lot to cheer about. Gabe Vogel had two hits and two RBIs, Aaron Kawasaki had two singles and an RBI, Charlie Vogel had a double and two RBIs, Leo Castillo had a single, and Isaiah Esquivel hit a double to left field.
Most of the runs arrived in the bottom of the fourth inning. St. Margaret's got the first two outs quickly, but then Dylan Liu was hit by a pitch and Nathan Olivarez walked. The next batter, Kawasaki, hit a ground ball into right field, and Liu came home to put the Tigers on top, 3-2. Gabe Vogel followed with a single to right and Olivarez scampered home. Bracamonte walked to load the bases and Charlie Vogel promptly cleared them with a hard hit double to left. A error on a ball hit by Diego Gurfein brought the score to 8-2.
The Tigers got a chance to play on a major league field and it lived up to all expectations.
