Payson, AZ — By GameChanger Media Gracie Umphress hit two home runs and drove in three as Show Low Varsity Cougars defeated Payson 20-2 on Thursday. Umphress homered in the third and second innings. Show Low Varsity Cougars got on the board in the top of the first inning after Avery Ervien singled, Tatum Townsend hit a sacrifice fly, and Riley Heuett tripled down the right field line, each scoring one run. Show Low Varsity Cougars added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after Umphress homered to center field, Aspyn Clark doubled down the left field line, and Ari Rivera lined out, each scoring one run. Show Low Varsity Cougars scored six runs on seven hits in the top of the third inning. Heuett singled, scoring one run, Angelee Villa singled, scoring one run, Umphress homered to right field, scoring two runs, Addisyn Clark singled, scoring one run, and Ervien singled, scoring one run. Show Low Varsity Cougars scored eight runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning. Clark drew a walk, scoring one run, Rivera was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Clark tripled, scoring three runs, Townsend singled, scoring one run, and Villa doubled, scoring two runs. Clark earned the win for Show Low Varsity Cougars. The hurler allowed two hits and two runs (zero earned) over four innings, striking out seven and walking two. K Smith took the loss for Payson. The pitcher went four innings, giving up 12 runs (11 earned) on 15 hits, striking out two and walking one. Show Low Varsity Cougars tallied 19 hits in the game. Clark provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Show Low Varsity Cougars with four runs batted in. The catcher went 3-for-4 on the day. Umphress, Ervien, and Clark each collected three hits for Show Low Varsity Cougars. Heuett, Villa, Townsend, and Clark each collected multiple hits for Show Low Varsity Cougars. Show Low Varsity Cougars worked the count all day, tallying five walks. Smith led Payson with one run batted in. The pitcher went 1-for-2 on the day.
