Zion-Benton Varsity Zee-Bees fell 7-3 to Elgin Varsity Maroons on Wednesday at Zion-Benton Township High School District 126 despite out-hitting them six to four. Michael Gonzalez and Ivan Jones each collected two hits for Zion-Benton Varsity Zee-Bees.
Zion-Benton Varsity Zee-Bees opened the scoring in the second after Trey Harmon grounded out, scoring one run.
Zion-Benton Varsity Zee-Bees added two runs in the third after Jack Marabella singled down the left field line.
Elgin Varsity Maroons flipped the game on its head in the top of the seventh, scoring seven runs on two hits to take the lead, 7-3.
AJ Neargarder stepped on the bump first for Zion-Benton Varsity Zee-Bees. The right-handed pitcher gave up two hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings, striking out eight and walking three.
Marabella drove the middle of the lineup, leading Zion-Benton Varsity Zee-Bees with two runs batted in. The left-handed hitter went 1-for-2 on the day. Dominic Diliberti paced Zion-Benton Varsity Zee-Bees with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting six walks for the game. Zion-Benton Varsity Zee-Bees turned two double plays in the game.
