San Juan Capistrano, CA — A standout performance on the mound by senior Max Reimers propelled the @jserra.baseball team to its’ second straight win in the Boras Baseball Classic on Wednesday, as the Lions defeated the Vista Murrieta Broncos 3-2 at JSerra Catholic High School.
The Lions improve to 5-3 overall.
JSerra jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Senior Tyler Dunning walked and senior Carter Meza produced an infield single to put runners on first and second to start the frame.
Senior Jordan Marian’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, and one batter later, sophomore Shane D’Arcy’s groundball to second base was thrown past the Broncos first baseman for an error which allowed Dunning and Meza to score.
Dunning increased the Lions’ advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning, when he connected on an RBI double to left field to score sophomore Liam Gonzalez, who ran for senior Cole Strane after he reached base with a one out walk.
Reimers was in dominant form on the mound for the Lions from the opening batter of the game.
The Santa Clara University bound hurler had the Broncos’ hitters off balance throughout his six masterful shutout innings, in which he allowed only one hit while striking out 11 batters.
Vista Murrieta nearly thwarted Reimers’ sparkling performance in the top of the seventh inning, as they pushed across two runs on back-to-back bases loaded walks with one out.
But freshman Jax Janeski recorded the final two outs of the game with the bases loaded to preserve the Lions’ victory.
JSerra will host undefeated Corona High School (the nation’s top-ranked team) on Thursday in the tournament semifinals.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
