There were runs aplenty on Thursday at Valley Center, as Goddard Varsity Lions bested Valley Center Varsity Hornets 14-10. Goddard Varsity Lions collected 12 hits, while Valley Center Varsity Hornets had eight.
Lincoln Jensen struck out 10 batters on the day. The starter also gave up three hits and two runs over five innings while walking five.
Goddard Varsity Lions got on the board in the top of the first inning after Valley Center Varsity Hornets committed an error, Bryer Rojas doubled to center field, and Valley Center Varsity Hornets committed an error, each scoring one run.
A double by Kane Dunlavy extended the Goddard Varsity Lions lead to 4-1 in the top of the third inning.
Goddard Varsity Lions scored five runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning. Landon Kohlhorst singled, scoring one run, Taylor Cape singled, scoring two runs, and Dunlavy doubled, scoring two runs.
Jack Dingman took the loss for Valley Center Varsity Hornets. The hurler went five innings, surrendering six runs (four earned) on seven hits, striking out five and walking two. Eastyn Vieyra collected the save. Aaron Topham and Cash Goodwin each appeared in relief for Goddard Varsity Lions.
Goddard Varsity Lions collected 12 hits in the game. Leadoff hitter Kohlhorst led Goddard Varsity Lions with three hits in five at bats. Jensen and Dunlavy were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in three runs for Goddard Varsity Lions. Rojas collected two hits for Goddard Varsity Lions in three at bats. Goddard Varsity Lions had patience at the plate, collecting nine walks for the game. Rojas and Jaxson Mruk led the team with two bases on balls each. Kohlhorst stole two bases. Goddard Varsity Lions ran wild on the base paths, amassing six stolen bases for the game.
Braden Hietsman and Cooke each collected two hits for Valley Center Varsity Hornets. G Saner, A Saner, and Needham each drove in two runs for Valley Center Varsity Hornets. Connor Meyer paced Valley Center Varsity Hornets with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, piling up 12 walks for the game. Saner stole three bases. Valley Center Varsity Hornets stole six bases in the game.
