Hastings, MI — Bryce Freese collected three hits in three at bats, as Caledonia Fighting Scots (JV) defeated Hastings Junior Varsity Saxons 7-6 on Thursday at Hastings High School Baseball. Freese tripled in the fifth inning, doubled in the first inning, and doubled in the third inning. Caledonia Fighting Scots (JV) didn't take the lead until later in the game. The game was tied at six in the top of the fifth when Mason Tossava induced Oliver Olmstead to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored. Caledonia Fighting Scots (JV) got on the board in the top of the first inning after Freese doubled to center field, and Brody Nichols hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run. In the bottom of the second inning, Hastings Junior Varsity Saxons went back into the lead after Joey Furrow walked, Jonah Hamp singled to right field, Elijah Gilbert singled to center field, Tanner Krzysik walked, and Hastings Junior Varsity Saxons scored on a passed ball, each scoring one run. Caledonia Fighting Scots (JV) jumped back into the lead in the top of the fifth inning after Freese tripled to center field, Chase Whisler singled to center field, Justin Golembeske singled to right field, and Olmstead grounded into a fielder's choice, each scoring one run. Jett Nofz took the loss for Hastings Junior Varsity Saxons. The hurler went four innings, allowing five runs on five hits, striking out one and walking four. Gavin Seabert stepped on the bump first for Caledonia Fighting Scots (JV). The starter surrendered three hits and five runs (four earned) over one and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking five. Drew Nichols collected the save. Olmstead appeared in relief for Caledonia Fighting Scots (JV). Whisler and Freese were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected three hits for Caledonia Fighting Scots (JV) while hitting back-to-back.
