Caledonia, MI — Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen)'s bats were strong against Portage Central Freshman Mustangs on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen) fell 11-10 at Grand Ledge High School. Portage Central Freshman Mustangs collected 10 hits, while Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen) had 13. Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen) was right in it until Portage Central Freshman Mustangs in the seventh inning. Portage Central Freshman Mustangs opened the scoring in the first after Aiden Bishop singled, scoring one run. Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen) flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs on four hits to take the lead, 6-1. The biggest blow in the inning was an error that drove in two. Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen) committed an error, which helped Portage Central Freshman Mustangs tie the game at six in the top of the fifth. A double by Sawyer Tague gave Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen) the lead, 7-6, in the bottom of the fifth. Portage Central Freshman Mustangs jumped into the lead in the top of the sixth when Colton Woodhams singled, scoring one run, and Jaedon VandenBussche was struck by a pitch, driving in a run. Portage Central Freshman Mustangs took the lead in the top of the seventh inning after Woodhams was struck by a pitch, and Ethan Kennedy scored after tagging up, each scoring one run. Evan Crater opened the game for Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen). The pitcher gave up three hits and three runs (one earned) over two and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking two. Gage Openshaw took the loss for Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen). The righty went four innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out four and walking one. Jack Rozema opened the game for Portage Central Freshman Mustangs. The hurler allowed seven hits and seven runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out three and walking two. Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen) piled up 13 hits in the game. Holmes provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen) with four runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-4 on the day. JJ Abbott, Holmes, Gasciogne, and Eli Jurmu each collected two hits for Caledonia Fighting Scots (Freshmen). Portage Central Freshman Mustangs collected 10 hits in the game. Brady Lothschutz, Bishop, and Kennedy each collected two hits for Portage Central Freshman Mustangs. Bishop and Woodhams were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Portage Central Freshman Mustangs.
