Recap
Washington, MI — The Highlander Freshmen Football team outlasted the Romeo Freshmen Bulldogs 7-6 in a bruising slugfest that may have featured the stoutest opposing interior line that the team will face all season.
Romeo took the opening kickoff and put together a short drive that was stopped at midfield and were forced to punt. The following Highlander drive made it to the Bulldog 25-yard line where a fumble gave the ball back to Romeo. The Bulldogs tried to catch the Highlander defense sleeping with a double pass on the first play, but the deep ball was broken up by #24 Linus Thalman. The Bulldogs moved the ball inside the Adams 10-yard line but on fourth down at the 4-yard line the defense broke free on a passing attempt and were able to force a strip-sack back at the 22-yard line. The Highlanders got a big gain when #5 Andrew Geottes found #32 Lucas Budrick for a 40-yard gain before the drive stalled and the ball was turned over on downs. Adams forced a three-and-out and time ran out on the first half with the ball near mid-field.
The Highlanders received the ball to open the second half and were able to pound the ball down the field with Geottes and #35 Brayden Markey running it through holes that the O-Line were able to open in the Romeo defense. On second and goal Markey dove ahead for a Highlander touchdown! The point after by #86 Logan Cantalupo was good and Adams took the 7-0 lead. Romeo was able to move the ball downfield on the following drive to the Adams 41-yard line where #71 Avery Rambow broke into the backfield and pressured the Quarterback into throwing an interception to #81 Alex Schneider at the Adams20.
Adams’ offense took the ball into the fourth quarter, but the drive stalled at the Romeo 29-yard line. The Romeo quarterback got loose on a scramble, but #22 Isaac Chue ran him down and punched the ball loose for a turnover at the Adams 7-yard line. On the next play, the Bulldog defense jumped on a loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Romeo was not able to field the snap on the PAT and the score was Adams 7, Romeo 6.
The Bulldog onside kick the ball was fielded cleanly by Budrick and the Highlander offense ground out a few first downs over the last four and a half minutes and lined up in the Victory formation for the last two snaps to end the game.
