Irvine, CA — Article courtesy of Daryl Bogard University High School’s football team stopped previously undefeated Los Amigos four times on fourth down including three times in the red zone (twice inside the 5-yard line) to win at home 23-7 Thursday night in a non-league game. In front of a boisterous Trojan Army student section, birthday boy Jake Rabold accounted for all of the Trojans’ points with three field goals, two touchdown receptions and two extra points. He had an interception for good measure. He also punted twice for a total of 73 yards, had five kickoffs for 280 yards and made three tackles. Uni (1-1) opened the scoring with a 40-yard first quarter field goal. Los Amigos, who came in with a 16 regular season games winning streak countered with a 21-yard scoring strike from southpaw sophomore quarterback Mytrell Smith to junior wide receiver Alexis Marcelo-Chamu. With 2:08 left in the half, the Trojans drove 51 yards on four passes (three to Rabold) culminating in a 39-yard field goal as time expired to cut the deficit to 7-6. Near the end of the third quarter, Dylan Elmer got the band to their feet hitting Rabold on a 26-yard scoring strike to give the Trojans a 13-7 lead. With just under nine minutes to go in the game on a fourth and three, senior Jacob Najar made a key play stopping Los Amigos running back inside the one yard line. Two plays later Elmer got the cheerleaders dancing, passing to Rabold for a game-breaker 99-yard touchdown pass. Rabold capped the scoring with a 44-yard field goal late in the game for the final margin. Other offense standouts included captain Lucca Clouthier who made his first career start at running back rumbling for 67 yards on 12 carries. Elmer had a hand in all the scoring as the passer or the holder on all the scores. The junior was 12 for 21 for 243 yards. Rabold caught five of those for 157 yards. Senior Captain Cruz McMullens hauled in five for 52 yards including a huge diving catch in game leading drive. Najar was a beast on defense against the Lobos leading the Trojans with 10 tackles, including three for loss. Another defensive standout was Pierce Fournier who was a force with 9 tackles. Luke Emrich and Adham Osman were both impressive with 6 tackles. Senior captain Arvin Jahangiri was impactful with 4 tackles. Sophomore Charlie Carmichael was super with 4 tackles and a huge 20 yard catch resulting in a first down. McMullens added 3 tackles and a key pass deflection. UNI looks to build off the victory against Estancia as they hit the road against the Eagles.
