Garden Grove, CA — Article courtesy of Daryl Bogard Pacifica broke open a one-score game with four touchdowns in a seven-minute period in the fourth quarter to prevail over University on homecoming in a game played at Garden Grove High School, 42-6. In the first week of Omicron League play, the game was scoreless for almost the first quarter-and-a-half due to four turnovers (two by each team) with three in the red zone. Senior quarterback James Anema connected with junior wide receiver Max Salas on an 11-yard scoring strike in the back of the end zone. Pacifica led 7-0 at halftime. With just under eight minutes to go in the third quarter, Anema found his favorite receiver, senior David Carlson for a 35-yard touchdown toss to put the Mariners up 14-0. Carlson had eight catches for 105 yards on the evening. However, the Trojans would answer on a 70-yard drive culminating in a six-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Dylan Elmer to senior wideout Cruz McMullens, cutting the deficit to 14-6. Elmer passed for 232 yards with McMullens hauling in nine receptions for 213 yards, his second consecutive week with 200-plus receiving yards and now in range to be the all time Trojan season leader in receiving yards with 4 games remaining. Pacifica, the defending league champions, put 28 points on the board in the fourth quarter and didn’t look back. On defense, the Trojans were led by an impressive performance by improving Deandre Miller who got 12 tackles and forced a key fumble in the red zone. Arvin Jahangiri had a big night with 8 tackles. Lucas Thune had his best game of the season getting 5 tackles including two huge tackles for loss. Joey Davis made a big interception at the Goal Line for the Trojans keeping Pacifica out of the end zone and the Trojans close in the first half. Next Friday University (2-4, 0-1) hosts Buena Park (4-2, 0-1). UNI can move into third place with a win as they continue to push for a playoff spot and a .500 or better record. Encouraging for the Trojans, is the game is at UNI where the Trojans have shown to be an outstanding team going 2-0. UNI also benefits this year with its final 4 games being played at UNI for the first time in recent memory.
