Recap
Irvine, CA — University High School battled last year’s CiF champion for 23 minutes and 40 seconds before things went south quickly and the Portola Bullfogs never looked back coasting to a 32-3 victory.
University went on a 8-minute plus drive culminating in a 34-yard field goal by senior Jake Rabold to cut the deficit to 7-3 with 41 seconds remaining in the half.
Portola then had two game changing plays sandwiching halftime. This included a 70-yard scoring strike with 9 seconds to go before half and an opening kickoff off of the second half return for a touchdown.
Two Trojan seniors stood out. Arvin Jahangiri had 3 receptions for 41 yards and accounted for two red zone turnovers, a fumble recovery at the one yard line and an interception in the end zone. Lucca Clouthier caught two passes for 30 yards, punted four times for 153 yards (including one for 57 yards), ran a fake punt for 15 yards and had two tackles for loss on defense (one a sack, fifth in career).
Despite the loss, the Trojans remain opportunistic to achieve some big achievements for the program in recent years.
Most notably:
- a playoff spot for first time in last 10 years
- a .500 or better regular season record for first time in last 6 years
- beating Woodbridge 2 out of 3 years a first time in 17 years
Kickoff against crosstown rival Woodbridge for the Game is this Friday at 7 pm at UNI Stadium in what promises to be an electric atmosphere.
