Tucson, AZ — The last time Sahuaro and Sabino squared off, it came down to the wire. This time, there was no doubt. The Cougars steamrolled the Sabercats on Friday night, walking away with a dominant 44-6 victory — their most explosive performance of the season. From the opening whistle, Sahuaro’s offense looked unstoppable. They racked up a season-high 44 points behind a relentless ground attack that left Sabino reeling. Leading the charge was Lekie Sika, who turned just five carries into 81 yards and a touchdown. Right behind him was Anakin Alexander, slicing through the defense for 49 yards and two scores of his own. In total, the Cougars rumbled for 208 rushing yards, marking their third straight game topping 150 on the ground. But it wasn’t just the offense putting on a show. The Cougars’ defense turned up the heat and made life miserable for Sabino’s quarterback, snagging three interceptions on the night. Jayvion Gilbert-Rojas, David Gutierrez, and Michael McCord each came away with a pick, with McCord also tallying a season-best nine tackles to lead the defense. The statement win lifts Sahuaro to 4-1 on the year, while Sabino’s three-game winning streak came to a screeching halt, dropping them to 3-3. Up next, the Cougars hit the road to face Walden Grove in their first big conference test of the season. Meanwhile, the Sabercats will look to bounce back at home against Pusch Ridge Christian Academy, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. Friday.
