Wachusett Downs Westboro 9-0 in Opening Round of Boro's Cup

Jake Penniman was named Player of the Game tonight. Jake scored his first career goal and added an assist.
Westborough, MA — The Mountaineer Ice Hockey team will look to capture its 4th straight Boro's Cup Championship on Saturday after defeating Westboro in the opening round tonight by a score of 9-0.
Wachusett didn't waste any time scoring just 28 seconds into the game. Senior, Ryan Flaherty scored on a nice feed from Cody Penniman. Ethan Bennett also earned an assist.
After some back and forth play throughout the first period in which both teams hit multiple posts, Wachusett extended the lead to 2-0 at the 13:51 mark of the period. Senior defenseman Jake Penniman netted his first career goal on a snipe from the top of the circles. The goal was unassisted.
Senior Travis Laidlaw extended the lead to 3-0 with just 26 seconds remaining in the first period. Cody Penniman and Pat Vallee recorded assists.
The Mountaineers would dominate the 2nd period, scoring 4 times and outshooting the Rangers 23 - 10.
Sophomore defenseman Owen Ambach scored from the point at 2:19 with assists going to Laidlaw and C. Penniman.
Laidlaw would score his 2nd of the night at 10:46 with Flaherty getting the assist.
Senior Brayden Allaire scored the only power play goal of the night on a feed from Matt Brousseau.
Flaherty would close out the scoring for the period with his 2nd of the night at the 14:40 mark with both Penniman brothers assisting.
The clock would run for the entire 3rd period and again Wachusett carried the play outshooting Westboro 8 to 3. Senior Caden Lane scored off a nice faceoff draw from Matt Brousseau.
Sophomore Vaughn Lane would tip home a Patrick Vallee shot from the point to close out the scoring at the 10:12 mark. Junior Luke Kirton assisted as well.
Kevin Shaw posted his first career shutout stopping all 22 shots he faced including a couple strong flurries in the first 2 periods.
With the win, Wachusett will play Marlboro in the finals of the Boro's cup at 7:30 pm on Saturday night in hopes of winning its 4th straight championship.
