Great Team Effort Leads to Mounaineers' 5-1 Win Over Scituate
Scituate 1, Wachusett Regional 5
Senior forward Caden Lane and Sophomore goalie Reed LaBaire were named Player of the Game by their teammates against Scituate.
Westborough, MA — The Wachusett hockey team improved to 6-1-1 on the season Saturday night with a complete team victory, 5-1, over the Scituate Sailors.
After giving up one goal in the first period, sophomore goalie Reed LaBaire shut the door stopping 29 of the 30 shots he faced. The defense in front of him did a great job of clearing rebounds and controlling the puck all night.
After trailing 1-0 at the first intermission, Wachusett scored 2 goals in the first 1:05 of the 2nd period to take command of the game and never look back. Entering the period, the teams both had a man in the sin bin and would start 4 on 4. Just 46 seconds in, Cody Penniman collected a pass from linemate Ryan Flaherty and buried a shot from the right circle. Travis Laidlaw also earned an assist on the goal.
The Sailors penalty would expire and Wachusett would be short handed for about a minute. Matt Brousseau hustled in to disrupt a breakout forcing a turnover. He slid the puck to senior, Aiden Boyce, who roofed a snap shot to put Wachusett up 2-1.
At the 6:45 mark, Wachusett was on the power play when junior, defenseman, Ethan Bennett skated down the left side. He threw the puck towards the net and it deflected off a skate over the goalies shoulder increasing the lead to 3-1. Defensemen Jake Penniman and Colin Carlson both picked up assists on the goal.
The score would stay 3-1 until a 1:10 into the third period when Cody Penniman would score the team's 2nd shorthanded goal of the night. Owen Ambach and Ryan Flaherty assisted on the goal. Then at 9:53, Penniman would complete his hat trick, scoring his team-leading 10th goal of the season. This was again assisted by his linemates Laidlaw and Flaherty.
It's great to see the boys come together like they did tonight, fight off some early adversity and earn a well-deserved victory.
The team will look to remain undefeated in the Mid-Wach A Conference on Wednesday night when they take on the Algonquin Titans at 6:10 pm at NorthStar.
