Medford, MA — The ice hockey team increased its unbeaten streak to 12 straight games last night with a 6-0 win on the road over Medford. Despite the weather and traffic-riddled ride. The team again got off the bus with a fast start and never looked back.
The "Red Line" of Cody Penniman, Ryan Flaherty and Travis Laidlaw were buzzing last night as their relentless forecheck pinned Medford in their own zone all night long.
Just 3:34 into the first period Ryan Flaherty buried a centering pass from Cody Penniman to put Wachusett up 1-0. Laidlaw also assisted. The trio would combine on the second goal at 6:42, again with Flaherty scoring and assists going to Penniman and Laidlaw.
Wachusett would find themselves on the Power Play with under a minute left in the first. Sophomore defenseman Colin Carlson snapped home a shot to extend the lead to 3-0 going into the first intermission. Junior Ethan Bennett assisted on the goal.
Although Wachusett would carry the play in the 2nd, outshooting Medford 12 to 1, they would only score 1 goal. At 8:32 of the frame, Senior Aiden Boyce banged home a rebound of a Zach Hoadley shot. Senior Jake Penniman also assisted on the goal.
Wachusett entered the 3rd with a 4-0 lead. It only took 23 seconds for Cody Penniman to make it 5-0 as he collected a breakout pass from Flaherty, raced down the right side beating the defenseman and the goalie to score his team-leading 19th goal of the season. Junior Erik Nordahl also assisted on the goal.
Senior Mat Brousseau would close out the scoring just 1:10 into the final period as he buried a centering pass from Brayden Allaire who created a turnover on the forecheck. Bennett was credited with his 2nd assist of the night.
Team defense was solid, holding Medford to just 7 shots in the game. Kevin Shaw earned his 2nd shutout of the season in net.
The team is now 14-1-1 on the season and will play Nashoba at the New England Sports Center on Wednesday at 4 pm.
But, prior to that is the annual 3 v 3 tournament on Monday night at practice. The team typically competes for 2nd place as the Coaches have had a stronghold on the title for a few seasons now.
Good luck boys!
