Sophomore defenseman Owen Ambach was awarded POG by his teammates for his solid play and scoring the game's first goal.
Marlborough, MA — In a matinee at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, the Wachusett Ice Hockey team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 7-3 win over Nashoba.
Sophomore defenseman Owen Ambach opened the scoring for Wachusett at 9:38 of the first period with a shot from the blue line. Erik Nordahl and Brayeden Allaire assisted on the goal. At 13:50, Travis Laidlaw scored the first of his two goals to extend the lead to 2-0. Colin Carlson and Ryan Flaherty assisted.
Wachusett exploded for 5 goals in the 2nd period to open up the game. Cody Penniman scored at 4:30. Laidlaw and Ethan Bennett assisted on the goal. Nashoba would get their lone goal of the second at 5:56 closing the gap to 3-1. But Wachusett would continue the onslaught at 7:54, Laidlaw scored his second on the power play with Matt Brousseau and Ryan Flaherty assisting. Brousseau would score just 33 seconds later again on the power play to increase the lead to 5-1. Allaire and Caden Lane earned assists. Penniman would score the last two goals of the period at 10:01 and 10:44. Flaherty assisted on both goals (4 assists total in the game) and Laidlaw would also pick up an assist on the the first goal as well.
With the clock running and a big lead, the Mountaineers took their foot off the gas pedal in the third, but still came out with a 7-3 win after Nashoba scored two goals.
Reed LaBaire made 11 saves in net to earn the win. The team is now 15-1-1 on the season with just 3 games left in the final week of the regular season.
Wachusett will travel to BU's Walter Brown Arena on Saturday night to take on Brookline at 8 pm before retunting home for the final two games of the regular season on Monday and Wednesday next week against Westboro and Lexington. Both games are scheduled to start at 2:30 pm.
