Westborough, MA — Congrats to Cody Penniman for setting a new scoring record for Wachusett hockey players. Cody had 1 goal and two assists and now has 135 points on his career, the highest mark for any player in Green & White since 2000. Wachusett skated to a 9-2 win over Westboro. This is Wachusett's 17th win of the season, tying the all-time mark in school history. This is only the 3rd time in the 65+ year history of the Wachusett Hockey Program that a team has achieved 17 wins. (1969-70 & 2019-20). Wachusett did not have a great start to this game falling behind 1-0 at the 6:54 mark of the first period, but Brayden Allaire would start the scoring with a power play goal at 9:32. Assists went to Caden Lane and Colin Carlson. Jake Penniman would put the Mountaineers up 2-1 prior to the 1st intermission with a goal at 12:34, scoring off a faceoff. Aiden Boyce earned the assist. Wachusett would score the first 3 goals of the second period before Westboro scored to make the score 5-2 entering the 3rd. Boyce blocked a shot in our defensive end and sprinted out on a breakaway beating the goalie below the blocker on an unassisted goal at 2:29. Travis Laidlaw sniped a wrist shot in the top shelf at 6:26 with assists going to Cody Penniman and Ryan Flaherty. Flaherty would score the 5th Mountaineer goal with Cody Penniman and Matt Brousseau assisting just as a power play expired. The team really got buzzing in the third scoring 4 unanswered goals. The first was at 2:09 when Caden Lane scored on a centering pass from Allaire. Owen Ambach earned an assist. Then, the highlight of the night....Jake Penniman stole a puck and dangled a defenseman at the blue line, racing in on a 2 on 0 with his brother Cody. Jake pulled the puck left and slid the puck to Cody on the right to bang it into the open side of the net, giving Cody his 135th point of his career to set a new record. After a brief pause in the game to honor the accomplishment, the Mountaineers kept applying pressure. A Westboro player incurred 2 major penalties and a Game DQ, putting Wachusett on a 5-minute power play. Matt Brousseau scored a power play goal at 9:55 to put Wachusett up 8-2. Carlson and Allaire assisted on the goal. Boyce would collect his 2nd of the night (3 points) at 14:23 to finish the scoring at 9-2. Vaughn Lane and Patrick Vallee assisted on the goal. Reed LaBaire earned the win in net stopping 16 Ranger shots. Reed is undefeated in his career as a Mountaineer with 11 wins and no losses. Wachusett is now 17-1-1 on the season and will have a chance to set a new school record for regular season wins in its last game of the year against Lexington at 2:30 pm on Wednesday.
