New Brunswick, NJ — Sayreville delivered a memorable performance Monday at the MLK Round Ball Classic, defeating Middle Township, one of New Jersey’s top public high school programs, 74–64 at New Brunswick High School. The Bombers came out firing in the opening quarter, building an early 23–15 lead behind sharp execution on both ends of the floor. The second quarter continued in Sayreville’s favor, as they outscored Middle Township 17–13 to take a 40–28 advantage into halftime. Sayreville maintained control in the third quarter, answering every Middle Township push with timely baskets and strong defensive possessions. The Bombers won the quarter 22–18 to extend their lead heading into the final period. Middle Township made a late run in the fourth, outscoring Sayreville 18–12, but the Bombers showed poise down the stretch to secure the 10-point victory. The game will be remembered for a historic moment from senior guard Sam Jones, who scored 22 points and broke the Sayreville Boys Basketball All-Time Leading Scorer record with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the first quarter. The previous mark of 1,546 points was set by 1974 graduate Steve Makwinski. Jones now stands at 1,561 career points. Chidi Chukwurah delivered an outstanding all-around performance with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists, while Ziyan Jones added 21 points to give the Bombers balanced scoring against a high-level opponent. Blue Collar Basketball Game Awards were handed out following the win, with Sam Jones earning the Hard Hat Award, JC Lewis named Dime Dropper, and Chidi Chukwurah taking home The Boards Boss. With the victory, Sayreville improved its overall record to 10–5. The Bombers will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 20, when they travel to Old Bridge for a 5:15 p.m. tip-off.
