Ravens Lock In, Take Down Rival Woodside 35-25 in Statement Victory
Woodside 25, Sequoia 35
Redwood City, CA — In the game that mattered most, the Sequoia Ravens delivered a full 32-minute effort to earn a huge PAL Ocean league win over the Woodside Wildcats, 35-25.
After falling to Woodside earlier this season in a non-league matchup (39-26), the Ravens came into this one locked in, focused, and determined to respond. From the opening tip, Sequoia set the tone defensively and dictated the tempo of the game. Sequoia's gameplan centered around staying on high alert for Woodside's star duo, and the Ravens executed it to near perfection. The Wildcats' leading three-point shooter was held to just 1 made 3-pt field goal and a total of 7 points, while Woodside's other top scorer was held scoreless.
One team stat the Ravens track and pride themselves on is defensive kills, or 3 stops in a row. In the 1st half alone, Sequoia recorded 8 defensive kills, holding Woodside to just 5 points on 2-22 shooting. At halftime, the Ravens held a commanding 17-5 lead.
Woodside made their push in the 3rd quarter, outscoring Sequoia 15-9 to cut the deficit to 26-20, but the Ravens stayed composed. In the 4th quarter, Sequoia tightened the screws once again, adding 3 more defensive kills and finishing the night with 12 total. The Ravens also forced the Wildcats into 22 turnovers, sealing a complete team win.
Leading the way, sophomore guard Olivia Macuga directed the offense while pouring in a game-high 12 points, along with 2 steals and 2 blocks. Junior forward Kaitlyn Schernig stuffed the stat sheet with 5 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, and a handful of deflections and steals. Junior guard and captain Ally Petit provided a huge spark off the bench with 7 points and finished with a game-high +14 plus/minus.
A connected and total team effort. A big league win. A defensive statement. Another step in the right direction for this new era of Sequoia Girls Basketball.
