Westborough, MA — The Mountaineers came out flying in the first period Saturday night, outshooting Marlboro 12 to 2 in the first period and taking a 3-0 lead into the 1st intermission. Senior captain Cody Penniman got things started at the 6:48 mark of the first poking home a rebound of a Pat Vallee shot. Travis Laidlaw also assisted on the goal. Senior Ryan Flaherty would score at 9:30 to put Wachusett up 2-0. Laidlaw made a beautiful pass on a 2 on 1 break and Flares banged it home. Sophomore Lucas Brousseau netted his first career goal at 13:41 on a snipe from the top of the circles. Junior Heath Hebb recorded his first varsity point earning the assist. The ice continued to be tilted in the second frame as Wachusett outshot Marlboro 11 to 4 and increased the lead to 5-0. Just 1:50 into the period, junior defenseman Ethan Bennett took advantage of a neutral zone turnover and wristed home his first goal of the season. Senior Captain Matt Brousseau assisted on the goal. Flaherty would score his 2nd of the night at 7:47 with a sweet tip of an Erik Nordahl shot from the point. Colin Carlson was also credited with an assist. Marlboro would avoid the shutout on a fluke goals that took a strange bounce off the boards and eventually close the score to 5-2 in the third period before Senior captain Caden Lane finished out the scoring with just 6 seconds left in the game to make the final score 6-2. Seniors Brayden Allaire and Jake Penniman both earned assists on the goal. Congratulations to Cody Penniman for being named Tournament MVP. Cody had 1 goal and 4 assists in the two games. Ryan Flaherty and Kevin Shaw were named to the All-Tournament Team. Flares had 4 goals and an assist in the tournament. Kevin stopped 32 of 34 shots in the two games and had a shutout. The team is now 3 and 0 on the season and will travel to the Groton School on Tuesday to play the Patriots of North Middlesex in a 4 pm puck drop.
