Recap
Carterville, IL — Carterville High School pitchers Caidence Phillips, Taryn Ford, and Masyn Kries prevented Carbondale and Tolono Unity from scoring a single run, sweeping the three-team round-robin tournament Saturday on the home field, 7-0 and 1-0.
The Lions now stand 18-0 on the spring and have recorded 11 shutouts in those 18 wins. Seven of the last eight games have been shutouts, and of the remaining seven games, the Lions’ staff has allowed only one run five times.
The teams scoring more than one run against the Lions were East Peoria (8-2 Carterville win) and Johnston City (13-3 Carterville win).
In Game One against Carbondale, Phillips worked the first five innings. She allowed zero runs on zero hits with 14 strikeouts and one walk. One other Terriers batter reached base on an error, but was stranded at second base.
Kries relieved in the top of the sixth. She worked two innings, gave up no runs on one hit with two strikeouts and one walk. Earning Carbondale’s one hit was second baseman Chloe Dyer.
The Lions put the game away in the first inning with four runs crossing the plate. Colbie Bennett singled. Sophie Badiu was inserted as a courtesy runner. Savannah Gibbs walked. Phillips singled Badiu home with Gibbs moving to third.
Peyton Applehans was inserted as a courtesy runner for Phillips. Taryn Ford struck out, but the third strike was in the dirt and eluded catcher Sydney Tanner, allowing Gibbs to score and Ford to reach base. Applehans next scored on a sac fly off the bat of Lainey Workman and Ford, who stole third, scored on an RBI single by younger sister, Emi Ford.
The Lions tacked on one run in the second. Bennett reached second on a dropped pop fly. Badiu ran for her. Gibbs moved her to third on a groundout to second. Badiu scored on on an RBI single to left.
Carterville added two more runs in the fourth. Kendall Henriksen reached on an infield error. Anna Hubbard bunted for a single. A passed ball scored Henriksen and a wild pitch scored Hubbard.
Posting zeroes on the scoreboard when pitching is not the only benefit Phillips provides for the Lions. She had two of her team's five team hits with a walk and two RBIs. Bennett, Emi Ford and Hubbard had the other three hits.
“Caidence is playing on another level right now, both offensively and in the circle. It’s kind of become the expectation,” said Lions head coach Will Capie. “She was efficient and still racks up a ton of strikeouts.”
Phillips was pleased with her work.
“My curve was working well today,” she said. “We always look forward to this day (round-robin tournament). A lot of people show up and we wanted to show them what we have as a team. That’s why it was important to get the job done today.
“As I continue to work this season, I get more comfortable (in the circle),” Phillips said. “Hopefully, there is another level I can reach.”
In Game Two, Carterville prevailed over Tolono Unity, 1-0. It was a combined no-hitter for Ford and Phillips. Ford tossed the first five frames, striking out 10 with one walk.
Phillips entered in the sixth and threw two shutout innings with no hits allowed. She struck out five and was credited with the win when the Lions scored in the bottom of the sixth.
In the sixth, Gibbs led off with a single, her third hit of the game. Phillips followed with a single. Ford then delivered what turned out to be the game-winning hit. She had two hits for the game with a double and RBI.
Capie praised Ford’s performance as he did Phillips earlier in the day.
“Taryn pounded the zone, only throwing 66 pitches in five innings with 10 strikeouts,” he said. “She’s throwing with great velocity. Her rise is really spinning and she’s changing eye levels and speeds with her two-seamer.”
