Jones’ Buzzer-Beater Lifts Sayreville Past Holmdel at the Bomb Shelter
Holmdel 61, Sayreville War Memorial 63
Parlin, NJ — SAYREVILLE — In a game that came down to the final possession, Sayreville senior Sam Jones delivered a moment Bomb Shelter fans won’t soon forget.
Jones knocked down a pull-up jumper as time expired to give Sayreville a dramatic 63–61 victory over Holmdel High School on Tuesday night, capping a hard-fought comeback in front of a loud home crowd.
Holmdel controlled the early tempo, jumping out to a 12–4 lead after one quarter and carrying a 32–20 advantage into halftime. Sayreville struggled to find its rhythm offensively in the first half, but the tone shifted after the break.
The Bombers flipped the game in the third quarter, outscoring Holmdel 25–16 behind aggressive defense and improved ball movement to take a slim lead heading into the final frame. Sayreville continued to battle in the fourth, winning the quarter 18–13 and setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
With the game tied in the closing seconds, Jones created space off the dribble and calmly rose for the game-winning jumper as the buzzer sounded, finishing with a game-high 27 points.
Chidi Chukwurah added a strong all-around performance with 18 points and six rebounds, while Ziyan Jones chipped in 11 points. Andrew Provenza controlled the paint, earning “Boards Boss” honors with nine rebounds to go along with six points. JC Lewis orchestrated the offense with six assists and made his presence felt defensively, taking four charges to earn both “Dime Dropper” and “Blue Collar Hard Hat” recognition.
The win improves Sayreville’s record to 13–9 as the Bombers turn their attention to postseason play. Sayreville will host Perth Amboy on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the first round of the GMC Tournament at the Bomb Shelter.
