Harvard, IL — Sam Villarreal drove in six runs on two hits to lead Zion-Benton past Harvard 16-3 on Friday at Harvard High School. Villarreal singled in the second inning, scoring two runs, and singled in the third inning, scoring two.
Villarreal singled to center field, which helped Zion-Benton tie the game at two in the top of the second.
Zion-Benton flipped the game on its head in the top of the third, scoring seven runs on four hits to take the lead, 9-2. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Michael Gonzalez that drove in three.
Zion-Benton scored five runs on two hits in the top of the fourth inning. Adrian Gonzalez drew a walk, scoring one run, an error scored one run, an error scored one run, Brayden Duran hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Gonzalez singled, scoring one run.
Gonzalez earned the win for Zion-Benton. The right-handed pitcher surrendered six hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings, striking out seven and walking none.
Zion-Benton piled up nine hits in the game. Gonzalez went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Zion-Benton in hits. JJ Villalobos led Zion-Benton with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, piling up 10 walks for the game. Ross Ames stole two bases. Zion-Benton ran wild on the base paths, tallying four stolen bases for the game.
Zion-Benton plays at home on Monday against Stevenson in their next game.
