Chino Hills, CA — The @jserra.softball team closed out an undefeated start to the season-opening SoCal’s Finest Tournament on Tuesday, as the Lions earned back-to-back triumphs over Riverside Poly (4-0) and South Hills (2-0) at Big League Dreams in Chino Hills. The Lions are now 4-0. JSerra jumped out to 1-0 lead in the second inning of their opening game against the Bears. Sophomore Ava Van Heerde doubled to left with one out and advanced to third base on a groundout by senior Zena Edwards. Junior Allie Haupt promptly smacked a first pitch line drive single to right field to score Van Heerde. The Lions added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Brooklyn Lamb singled to start the inning and was sacrificed to second base by Van Heerde. Edwards plated Lamb with a ground ball RBI single to left field to make it 2-0. Haupt and sophomore Madeline Capek followed with singles to load the bases. After an out, sophomore Annabel Raftery hit a slow bouncing ball to second base that she beat out for an infield single that scored both Edwards and Haupt. That run support proved to be more than enough for senior Liliana Escobar, who tossed a complete game four-hit shutout while striking out 15 batters in seven innings. Raftery provided all the run support the Lions needed in their second game against the Huskies with one powerful swing. Junior Angie Jiminez led off the bottom of the third inning with a single to right field before Raftery blasted a 1-0 pitch high and deep over wall in right field for her first home run of the season. Capek was in control in the circle and produced the Lions’ second straight complete game effort, allowing only three hits and striking out four batters in seven innings. #lionnation #jserrasoftball #jserraathletics
