Lancers Battle Back but Fall Just Short Against Sunnyside, 5–4
Sunnyside 5, Salpointe Catholic 4
Tucson, AZ — Sunnyside jumped out fast with a four-run first inning on Wednesday, but Salpointe Catholic battled back all game long before falling just short, 5–4.
Despite the early deficit, the Lancers showed plenty of fight. Victor Corella was outstanding on the mound, delivering a dominant performance by tossing five hitless innings without allowing an earned run and keeping Salpointe within striking distance the entire way.
At the plate, Johnny Abramian sparked the offense, going 1-for-3 with a double, driving in two runs, and scoring once to help fuel the Lancers’ comeback push. Zachary Peura also made his presence felt, reaching base in all three of his plate appearances and crossing the plate for a run.
Salpointe Catholic drops to 2-2 on the season, but the Lancers have been right there in every game — their two losses have come by a combined two runs, showing just how close this team is to breaking through.
Next up, Salpointe will hit the road Friday for a matchup with Canyon del Oro at 4:00 p.m., looking to bounce back and get back in the win column. Sunnyside, now 2-6 after snapping a seven-game road skid dating back to last season, will travel to face Pueblo at 4:00 p.m.
