Tonganoxie, KS — Battling through a season full of injuries, the Chieftains were once again forced to adjust their lineup Friday night—this time missing another starting center back due to illness. Stepping up in a big way, Gemma Halsa dropped back into the role and helped anchor a defense that faced constant pressure from Basehor early on. Basehor struck quickly to take a 1-0 lead, but the Chieftains responded with composure. Grace Weatherford found the equalizer, finishing a strong attacking sequence to bring the game level. Despite creating several quality chances and showing promising moments in possession, the Chieftains were still working through adjustments up top and in the midfield with new combinations. Basehor capitalized once more before halftime, taking a 2-1 lead into the break. Coming out in the second half, the Chieftains looked more settled and determined. Their persistence paid off when Lilli Sanders buried a goal off a well-served corner from Legan Caraway, tying the match at 2-2. From there, the game turned into a back-and-forth battle, with both teams creating dangerous opportunities. Goalkeeper Chaynee Howell came up big multiple times, making key saves to keep the Chieftains in the fight. As regulation ended deadlocked, the intensity only increased in overtime. Both teams pushed for the winner, trading chances and testing each other’s endurance. With a demanding stretch of five games in eleven days, the Chieftains’ depth was put to the test, and several JV players stepped in to provide valuable minutes and energy. With just 40 seconds remaining in the second overtime, Basehor found the decisive moment. A long, high, powerful shot slipped just under the crossbar—perfectly placed and out of reach—giving Basehor a dramatic walk-off victory. Despite the result, the Chieftains showed resilience, growth, and fight throughout the match. After an intense stretch of games, the team will now look to recover and reset before returning home to face Bonner this Thursday.
