La Verne, CA — The Bearcats Varsity hosted the Chino Hills Huskies on Wednesday night in a thrilling four-set battle that featured momentum swings, long rallies, clutch plays, and relentless competition from both sides.
From the opening serve, it was clear the teams were evenly matched, trading points and answering impressive plays with plays of their own. The Bearcats edged out the Huskies 25-22 in the first set, but Chino Hills responded with a hard-fought 25-23 victory in the second.
The third set belonged to the Bearcats, who came out with renewed energy and dominated their way to a 25-18 win, putting them one set away from closing out the match.
The fourth set returned to the back-and-forth intensity of the opening frames, with long rallies and neither team willing to give an inch. The Bearcats stumbled out of the gate, allowing the Huskies to control much of the early portion of the set. But the momentum began to shift when sophomore #14 Kaiya Covarrubias entered the match. Covarrubias delivered clutch serves and calmly handled an aggressive Huskies serve, helping steady the Bearcats when they needed it most.
Junior #7 Sophie Silva then helped put the finishing touches on the victory, delivering a pair of decisive kills while making key contributions away from the ball. Her composure and all-around play helped the Bearcats close out the match and secure the win.
With the victory, the Bearcats improve to 2-0 on the season and will look to keep the momentum rolling when they face Calvary Baptist on Thursday, August 13, at 4:00 PM. Ketterling Gym Bonita H.S
