Breakers Battle to the Final Whistle in Hard-Fought League Showdown
Laguna Beach 14, El Modena 21
Orange, CA — The Laguna Beach Breakers traveled to Fred Kelly Stadium on Thursday night to take on fellow Delta League opponent, the El Modena Vanguards.
Laguna kicked off to start the game and on ElMo‘s first possession around midfield, the Breakers defense stood tall on fourth and short to take over possession.
On their first possession, Laguna drove the ball to the Vanguard’s 4 yard line, where freshman quarterback Braden Hansen found Brady Stringham for a 4 yard touchdown pass.
Laguna forced a three and out on the Vanguard’s next possession, but were unable to move the ball themselves. After both teams had punted to each other, Laguna Beach‘s Dean Smith caught ElMo off guard with a fake punt that ended in a first down for Laguna. Still the Breakers were unable to score.
With time winding down in the first half, Laguna punted once again to ElMo, with punter Dean Smith pinning them deep in their own territory at the 8 yard line. However, ElMo was able to drive down field and score on a 29 yard run to tie the score at 7-7. Laguna got the ball to the Vanguard 15, but a field goal attempt went wide left.
Laguna took the first possession of the second half, and drove the ball down field with the help of a roughing the passer penalty. With the ball on the 4 yard line, Bobby Gardner attempted to run up the middle twice to no avail. On fourth and one, Braden Hansen was able to find Brady Stringham on a crossing pattern for his second touchdown of the game. This put Laguna up 14 to 7.
After both teams were unable to move the ball effectively, Laguna started the fourth quarter with the lead and the ball on their own 20. Braden Hansen attempted to throw a speed out to receiver Hendricks McMann, but the Vanguard cornerback jumped the route, intercepted the ball, and ran it 20 yards for the tying touchdown.
Laguna was forced to punt on their next possession, and El Modena drove the ball to the Breakers 10 yard line, where they were able to punch the ball over for the go ahead score.
Both teams were unable to do much with their following possessions. And when ElMo got the ball back with 1:40 to go, Laguna was out of timeouts and had to watch as the clock went to zero.
Again, there was a lot of gutsy performance by Laguna Beach, especially from the four freshmen starting on Varsity: Harry Onel, Christian Hamelberg, Ryder Bright and quarterback, Braden Hansen.
The Defense did an outstanding job led by Wyatt Bogdan, Xavier Brooks, Sokka Molteni and Grayson Kazmouz. Colter Steris ripped the ball from the Vanguards hands, causing a fumble that was recovered by William Golden.
The Offensive Line did a wonderful job protecting freshman quarterback Hansen, and opening holes for running backs Bobby Gardner and William Golden to run through.
The O Line was centered by Kade Anderson, along with Luke Bogdan, Weston Darrow, Christian Hamelberg and Malik Morrison.
